(Side note, I have been having some issues with my computer and was meaning to post this last week but could not due to some technical difficutlites. His Birthday is actually on Jan 18th, but still needed to give him some props!)

Todays blog post is all about Philippe Starck, the legendary designer that has created so many gorgeous products and interiors. A man that has really been an inspiration to me and so many others. His iconic designs have made an impact all around the globe working with names such as Kartel, Alessi, Baccarat and so many more. Industrial design, furniture, graphics, and even designing a yacht, he is has truly done it all.

A true visionary in the design community and someone that deserves great respect. Happy Birthday! Here is to many more amazing designs coming our way.

Not that the iPhone needs to be covered up as it is quite gorgeous on it's own. However, if I had my way, I would love to have a new cover every week. I know, that would be wasteful however, a boy can dream, can't he?!

I wanted to share a website that my partner sent me a while back featuring thousands of iPhone covers in all different designs and motifs! There are literally thousands and it doesn't stop there, you can also get stretched canvas's, framed prints, t-shirts, and laptop decals! Oh my!

I want to introduce the Alykhan Velji Design team! With the business expanding I have had to hire on more staff and thought to introduce these fabulous ladies to you! As part of this team, they will be doing posts on their fave finds so stay tuned.

1. Sam Pinksen (Senior Designer)

Samantha Pinksen joined Alykhan Velji Designs in 2011. Her flare for all things DIY, natural eye for design and gift for creating perfect technical drawings made her a perfect fit for AVD. A small town Newfoundland girl (like 75 people small), she completed her Interior Design education at the International Academy of Design in Toronto and travelled extensively, developing her eclectic international style . Before joining the team, Sam worked extensively in commercial construction and working with freelance clients. Next time you see her, ask if she has any homemade peanut butter cups for you.

2. Helen Del Bucchia (Junior Designer)

Elena (Helen) Del Bucchia joined Alykhan Velji Designs in 2011 as a Junior Designer. After working in Calgary's bustling oil & gas industry for seven years, Helen decided it was time to stop suppressing her passion for interior design and enrolled in the Residential Decorating program at Mount Royal University, successfully completing it in 10 months.
Helen credits her upbringing in Russia, the US and later Canada for her unique style and love for colour. From a young age she was organizing, decorating, and designing the spaces around her.
If Helen is not decorating, coordinating or crunching numbers, she can be found travelling the globe with her husband or speed walking from one end of Calgary to another, stopping at every furniture and accessory store along the way.

Excess Baggage

I LOVE BAGS! Duffles, satchels, totes, you name it and I love it. I have quite the collection and adding to it every chance I get. Thanks to Twitter, I was introduced to EGForge, a fabulous home grown company out of Calgary, AB. I instantly knew that I had to blog post about them. Their line of bags from backpacks to messengers are fantastic, having a casual chicness that suites a lot of different styles.

Each bag is made with waxed canvas and oil-tanned leather that really ensures that these products only get better with age. Founded in 2011 by Eric Goodwin, his studio can be found in Art Central.

Palm Springs: A vintage lovers paradise!

As mentioned in a previous post, I was lucky enough to spend 2 weeks over the holidays in Palm Springs. A city which is definitely becoming one of my faves not only for the weather, but for the gorgeous style it has to offer. I am a vintage fanatic and this city has an abundance of stores that offer everything from vintage clothing to furniture.

This city also has some amazing hotels such as the Viceroy, Parker and the recently opened ACE. I will be doing some posts on these soon, so stay tuned!

I thought to share some of the photos that I took over my holiday. I hope you enjoy and if you ever have the chance to make your way to Palm Springs, it is well worth it!

X Ray Collection

While in Palm Springs this past holiday season, one of my favorite finds was this amazing collection of modern porcelain dishes from Micheal Weems and Rigo Moldonado. When I walked into the gallery, I instantly gravitated to the dishes and couldn't leave the store without taking one home with me. I ended up buying a rectangular dish with the fish x-ray and I LOVE IT.

These are vintage x-rays that were acquired by Michael Weems himself are perfect for dining or as art for the wall. The series consists of 5 different shapes and sizes with uniquely elegant images.

The gallery also includes a collection of fabulous Vintage Lamps made from vintage whisks, Classic Birds figurines from the 30's that have been updated with bold colours, and of course the Auto Erotica.

DIY Holiday Decor

I was on Breakfast Television Calgary this morning. Talking with Jill Belland all about DIY holiday decor. Shooting at the Brookfield Homes, Mosaic Cranston location (homes that I added to some festive flair to) was the perfect backdrop to talk all things DIY!

Here is a run down of a few of my faves that we chatted up today. Also, each one is under $5:

1. Button Ornaments

As easy as getting some wire, threading some buttons on, tying the 2 ends together and attaching a ribbon, to finish off the look. I did one with buttons purchased at Michael's, a dramatic black and gold. The other is with vintage buttons purchased at a garage sale, something fun and whimsical.

2. Ribbon Vases

Everyone has clear vases sitting in a cabinet collecting dust. This year, bring them out and add a fab splash of colour buy using ribbon. I chose to do a peacock inspired palette with the lime green and teal. This would work with additions of both silver and gold!

3. Tin Lanterns

An eco friendly option that can be used indoors or out. Simply take tin soup cans, peel off the labels and give them a good clean. Draw on festive patterns... trees, holly, or snowflakes. Take an awl (a term that I just learned today while on the show) and punch out these patterns. When complete, spray them white and stick a votive inside. A grouping on a table or placed outside to guide your guests into your home would be the perfect holiday touch!

4. Organic Votives

Using simple clear glass votives or vases, I hot glued large cinnamon sticks around the sides of each one. This really creates and organic statement piece and will cast fabulous shadows. A simply DIY project that doesn't take more than 5 minutes to complete.

Fluevog Grand Opening YYC

Worn by the likes of Madonna, Dee Lite, and Marilyn Manson, Fluevog shoes have become fashion history and are continuing to make a mark in the fashion world. Having started in Vancouver each shoe is designed by John Fluevog himself. The unique designs are sometimes over the top, zany and outrageous but that is what makes them Fluevogs. They have a huge followings with stores across Canada and the US.

I was invited to the grand opening of their fab new Calgary location last night and have to say I was so impressed by the space! Having a street front store on Stephen Avenue, the space is raw with original floors and brick. As soon as you enter, you are greeted by a large over scaled white Mooi chandelier that makes quite a statement. The space however doesn't take away from the stores crowning glory, the SHOES!

They have done something really inventive with this location, that no other location in North America offers. A gallery space in the lower level where they have set up, works that Fluevog fans have created and where they are hoping to showcase local talent. There is permanent Fluesuem on the upper level that showcases Fluevog through the times and a space where you can even have a hand in designing a pair yourself!

This space is a definite welcome to the YYC scene!

Marni for H&M Spring 2012

H&M was established in Sweden in 1947 and is synonymous with affordable as well as up to date quality fashion. They have recently been pairing with high end fashion houses such as Versace and Viktor and Rolf to make high end fashion available to the masses.

They have done it again! This time pairing with Marni to create a spring collection filled with signature prints and patterns. Creative director, Consuelo Castiglioni has created a collection for women and men that captures the essence of Marni and will be available March 8th, 2012 in 260 H&M stores worldwide and online.

I have been a fan of Marni for ages because of the playful way they mix bold prints and patterns. A true inspiration to the way I like to design my interiors. This collection has all the freedom and experimentation for which Marni is known for, with all over prints in in strong colours intended to be worn together in layers that both match and clash. I love this sensibility of not having to match.

For women, the colours are vivid, prints are bold. Sillhouettes are all staples with full pleated skirts, dresses, cropped pants, and jacquard kits. It also includes jewelry, shoes, bags and scarves.
For men, the colours are softened for a relaxed take on menswear staples that is truly Marni. Use of prints is subtle, appearing as a lining or as a contrast details in shirts.

Wallpaper is quite a commitment for most as it is quite permanent and can end up costing a lot. For those that are renting, it has been difficult to add any personal style to their space, again because nothing permanent could be done to the space.

Well, until now. Tempaper is a self adhesive temporary wall decor. Their traditional technique of gravure or intaglio copper plate engraving has been used since the latter part of the 19th century. Created by set decorators in NYC being frustrated with not having a source for temporary, reposition-able wallpaper. With so many different styles, colours and patterns available and new ones being introduced every season, it is a simple and cost effective way of adding some punch into any space.

Those that know me, know that I love me my candles. I burn them all the time and I have my faves, so I am glad to blog about my newest fave candle line.

I was invited to Vancouver to preview the holiday collection from Joe Fresh and PC Home. As you know, I do a lot of work with PC Home products. I truly believe they are a brand that is bringing great decor at affordable prices. I am a firm believer that you don't need to spend a lot in order to get a chic and stylish space.

A modern penthouse was styled to host fashionable peeps and showcase how these items can be used in everyday life.

So, for this holiday season, PC Home has come out with the most delicious dinnerware, accessories, and decor for the home that can't be passed up. The perfect way to add some festive sparkle to your home without breaking the bank! Every time I visit Vancouver I make it a point to stay at The Loden. It is one of my all time favorite places to stay. My partner Jason calls me five star Aly because I love staying at really great places that are well designed and have great service. I am happy to report that The Loden gives you all of this and at a great price!

The rooms are fabulous in their design and the beds are uber comfortable. Chic bathrooms with marble, custom warm toned cabinetry and antique bronze hardware. So amazing! The front lobby is stunnig in its design with its gorgeous fireplace feature with antiqued glass surround and inlayed floors. The service is also amazing and best of all, there are bikes for hotel guests to use, the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon in Vancouver.

The Tableau restaurant on the main floor is delicious: food, cocktails and a great latte in the morning can do you no wrong.

Next time you are in Vancouver, be sure to stay at The Loden. I assure you that you wont be disappointed. A well thought out space is hard to come by when it comes to hotels and The Loden has thought of pretty much everything.

Tranquil Escape

We recently completed a project on the outskirts of the city limits. The property is surrounded by stunning forests of birch trees and a fabulous view of the mountains. For this post I wanted to focus on the master bedroom. We decided to create a retreat of sorts with a soothing colour palette and a space that the clients would love to retire to at the end of a long day. Here is what we did:

1. Working with the clients existing bed, we added mirrored side tables for a hit of glamour (every space needs a little bling!).
2. The wallpaper is definitely the feature in the room, a neutral tone on tone floral that really makes the large room feel more inviting.
3. I am a big fan of white sheets on any bed, but we added colour through the gorgeous blue tones in the euro shams, coverlet and throw pillows.
4. Accessories on the night stands were kept to a minimum, chrome lamps with linen shades and gorgeous hydrangeas for simple and elegant look. If you are ever at a loss for what flowers to get, hydrangeas are it. They work in both modern and traditional spaces.
5. We played with a lot of different textures and patterns in the room to make it feel inviting but all in the same tones. The antique chair was reupholstered in a gorgeous velvet and we used this fabric as our jumping off point for the accent colour in the room.

I am a big fan of a good DIY project, however I will be the first to admit that sometimes I do bite or buy more than I can work out. Well, there is a new gal in town that will take your old pieces and give them a new lease on their design life. Perfect for those of us that have busy schedules and good intentions!

Versace for H&M

Yesterday marked the launch party for the Versace collection for H&M. The party hosted many a celebrity along with the who's who of fashion. I saw Coco Rocha (my most fave Canadian model), posting pics to her instagram of the runway show last night.

The outfits bring together different styles from the Versace archive. The long awaited collection features iconic pieces for woman such as draped metal mesh dresses, silk crepe dresses with gold buttons, multi colours panel print dresses, and the classic Versace leather jacket. For men, there are sharp suits, printed sweaters, print shirts, and studded leather jackets and trousers.

Over all, I have to say that I love how H&M is pairing with fashion houses to create exlusive collections that are affordable for the everyday consumer. I am sure we have all wanted to own something from Versace and now is our chance, starting Nov 19th!

I look forward to the day where they pair up with GUCCI!

Happy Halloween!

This year, I attended the Monster Ball which was a charity event for Prospect. Myself and the Alykhan Velji Design team attended the event! I was recently introduced to the amazing designs by Dina Gonzales Mascaro. I am accessory fanatic and have a passion for anything that is organic and textural. Dina's pieces (especially her rings) have an amazing rawness that I fell in love with. I have come across a lot of jewelry in my day and this has to be one of my all time faves!

Dina was born in Argentina and now lives and works in Canada. She has her masters in sculpture and has had solo and group exhibitions in Vancouver, Banff, and Argentina. Doing everything from sculpture, painting, and jewelry design, Dina is most definitely making her mark.

Divine Dishware

I was introduced to this work at IDSWest a few weeks back. These lovely hand made dishes really caught my eye as I have never seen anything like this before.

The Geodesic collection is gorgeous with its organic and textural look. I also love how the bowl doesn't sit up right but more at an angle, perfect to house delicious dips!

The Ladany collection is just as amazing with it's stackable quality and traditional pattern. The vessels have an almost Moroccan sensibility and would make perfect soup bowls or dishes to house smaller nibbles.

I am always on the look for new and innovative designs and this by far has been a stand out. LOVE!

IZM Furniture

I was fortunate enough to attend IDSWest this past weekend with a few fabulous designers from across Canada. We went as part of The Kitchen Design Council created by Blanco Canada. An amazing company that concentrates on kitchen sinks and faucets. They have recently launched their ReThink The Sink blog which I am happy to say that I will be a contributor for.

One of my favorite booths at the show would have to be IZM. They are a duo of designers Jared Mack and Shane Pawluk based out of Edmonton, AB. I have met these 2 before as they were recipients of the Western Living Designer of the Year awards last year. I love their philosophy when it comes to making their furniture: Build functional, durable and beautiful furniture.

Their designs are out of this world and I am happy to say that I have sourced a lot of their pieces for clients and will continue to do so. Their new line consists of these fitfat tables in white oak! LOVE everything about them... their shape, versatility and style.

New Design from Judy Ross Textiles

I have done a post about these fabulous hand stitched pillows before but I am excited to see that they have a new design for their fall collection, entitled Celine. I love the organic quality of the hand stitched embroidery and with the new design, I feel its a fresh take on the trellis pattern we were so used to seeing in design for the past few years. Great job! Can't wait to incorporate this into my next design project.

Do It Yourself- Home + Design Show Recap

This past weekend was the Calgary Home and Design Show, a 4 day show that exhibits the best in design, decor, building products in the Calgary area. This is my 5th year being involved and was excited to work on 2 fabulous features for the show as well as present on the main stage, sponsored by HGTV.

I thought to recap my features for those that couldn't make it to the show:

The first feature was aptly named DIY (Do It Yourself). I worked on this feature with another amazing designer, Rosalyn Lazaruk (Wicket Blue Interiors), who is based in Edmonton. The concept was to create projects that we could do ourselves in an afternoon or "crafternoon" as I would like to put it but also keep it under $100. Well, we went above and beyond and most of our projects fell in to a budget of less than $50!

The exterior of the booth was painted in custom designs by the fabulous ladies at Interiors to Inspire. I had the privilege of meeting these ladies and thought they would be perfect for this! A great way to showcase what you can do with a little imagination, paint and tape!

Yellow Goat Design

When researching some custom lighting options for a client I came across Yellow Goat Design. They are a company that specializes in custom lighting designs and manufacturing. Their designs are so unique that I had to do a post on them.

I find that sometimes lighting can get so boring and you end up seeing the same old thing over and over again. It was quite refreshing to find out that the designers at Yellow Goat Design were really stepping up and creating some bold ways to add impact with lighting.

Osborne and Little have just launched their new fall collection and by far, my favorite has to be the Komodo Collection. Taking inspiration from coats and skins of wild animals, the look really hits the animal print trend home. With names such as Panthera, Boa, and Cobra. My fave has to be the saturated colours of the Chameleon papers, the look is bold and sophisticated.

Legendary fashion house has partnered up with Target to create a chic line of fashion and home accessories. More and more, large fashion houses are pairing up with the likes of H&M and Target to create lines that are affordable and accessible to the everyday person. I could not be happier, now if they would just bring it to Canada!

Good Charma

A good friend of mine (Karen at Studio Gorgeous) has brought in a fabulous line of jewelry called Good Charma. I absolutely adore this line not only for the look but what it stands for. Every one has a special meaning (my fave is the black one with the wishbone! So CHIC!)

Created by New Yorker based designer Pamela Fink. Combining her love of balinese culture, personal collection of charms, and her innate sense of style, good charma was born. With dangling charms featuring wishbones, hearts, coins, engraved medallions were orginaly designed as a set of 6 with the idea that the wearer might pass one along as a sign of good fortune , echoing Pamela's belief in "Paying it forward". Such a cool concept!

And if that's not enough, these bracelets have been seen on the likes of Beyonce, Demi Moore, Meg Ryan, and Selena Gomez!

PI have been doing a lot of research on the internet lately and my latest discovery is a company called alice and sens. A company that loves their textiles. I saw these amazing pillows in their collection and literally gasped when they came up on the screen. The Mixelated collection is my fave. Love the floral pixels and the colour combos are delicious. They also make fabulous bags, accessories and of course, clothing.

Pillows are one of the easiest things to change in your space to mix it up. So go ahead, the seasons are changing and this is the perfect time to do so!

Inspiration- David Downton

When I first came across David Downton's work, it was at IKEA out all places at least 10 years ago. I was going through their frames section and came across a set of 5 postcards, all illustrations by the wonderful David Downton. I had no idea who he was until a few years ago when he was profiled on a TV show and I recognized his work.

Having worked in many fields doing illustrations, his calling came in 1996 when he was asked by the Financial Times to draw the couture shows and since then, he has mainly been a fashion illustrator. His client list includes Tiffany & Co, Bloomingdales, Harrods, Dior, and Chanel to name a few and he has drawn some of the worlds most gorgeous and influential women. He has a journal of fashion illustrations out called Pourquoi Pas?

I find his drawings to be amazing. So refined and subtle. His angles, brush strokes, and use of colour is just fabulous!

Fave Finds at Homesense

I was invited to attend the grand opening of the newest Homesense store in Calgary this morning. For those that know me, know that I love me some Homesense. I know the staff at most of the locations as I am in there constantly picking up items for clients and photo shoots.

I got an exclusive tour of the store and was asked to pick my five fave finds in the store. Walking around the massive 29,000 sq/ft store (biggest in Western Canada) I found it difficult to pick just 5 so here are my top 6:

1. Antelope sculpture ($59.99): I love this piece in all white. Adds a modern element to an organic piece. Would love to see this piece as an accessory on a side table or credenza

2. Media Unit ($599.99): The mix of walnut wood with the industrial hardware gives this piece a fabulous loft living style. The perfect addition to any modern home.

3. Mirrored Side Table ($149.99): The perfect way to add some glamour to any space.

4. Club Chair ($329.99): I love that it is upholstered in a lovely grey linen and the tufting and chrome nail head details give it a traditional feel.

5. Coral Inspired Lamps ($49.99-$59.99): This collection of lamps is stunning! The perfect way to add some Hamptons chic style to your space.

6. Side Table ($299.99): This mix of rustic wood with the glam of the mirror detailing is perfect. Would love to see these as side table in a bedroom with a fantastic upholstered headboard.

On my way back from Vancouver yesterday, I tuned into an episode of Fashion Television. Thrilled that I had found something fab to watch on my flight I was so intrigued by the segment they had on a photographer named Vivian Maier. Her story is just as amazing as her photographs.

Traveling back and froth from Europe and the States, Vivian finally ended up in Chicago after stints in NYC. Her main job was a caregiver and she took these amazing photographs as hobby until the early 90's. She left the world with over 10,000 negatives, documentary films, and audio recordings. Ones that never would have been found until John Maloof came across them at an auction and curated this amazing archive.

I love stories like this. Someone who was so talented but never really knew it. She just had an incredible passion for doing something that she loved and now, the rest of the world gets to see what she saw through her creative eye and through a camera lens.

Pop Art Beauties

I love being introduced to new artists and seeing what inspires them to create gorgeous works of art. One person that I was recently introduced to and have the privilege of owning of his pieces is Steve Csorba. I was given one of his pieces from his Pop Art Beauties collection and was so taken aback by its layered quality. I love the mix of graffiti, graphics, and then using a pin up girl as a central focus. It really makes a statement.

Steve is a visual artists that was born in Edmonton, but grew up in Vancouver. He is known for his paintings of sports legends such as Wayne Gretzky and Mohammud Ali. His works can be seen in the National Art Museum of Sports, many prominent private collections, and has been recognized by the Smithsonian Institute. Steven has survived cancer and took his 5 year recovery to create art as a cure.

I spoke with him briefly on the phone to thank him for the wonderful gift and can say that from what I have heard from others and my short conversation, he is not only talented but down to earth. I am honored to have one of his pieces hanging in my home.

Weekend Inspirations

Sunday afternoons are best spent relaxing and even taking a short drive somewhere you haven't been. For me, this past Sunday I took a trip about 30 min from Calgary to a place called Saskatoon Farm. This place is a one stop shop for plants, decor, brunch, and their delicious Saskatoon berry pies!

We walked the property that is filled with the most amazing range of plants, greenhouses with the most luscious hanging baskets, and of course the views... breathtaking. It is hard to think that this place exists so close to the city yet feels like its a million miles away.

My second post on Stampede Inspiration are barn doors. Whether your tastes are modern, traditional, or a little country, the barn door sliding door system really adds so much to a space. Not only is a great space saver, perfect for small spaces but also adds a little western flair into your space.

The obvious thing to do would be to use reclaimed wood however in the photos above you can see that painting these door also adds so much character and can really add some drama to an ordinary space. Glass is becoming a huge trend in these sliding door systems as well and fits in perfectly in modern decor. I especially love the exposed hardware which really adds an industrial touch.

Every year our fair city of Calgary hosts a week long event called The Calgary Stampede. The whole city turns to into a Western explosion with denim, rodeos, cowboy hats, and the like to be seen everywhere. As an ode to Stampede, I thought to do a few posts on how to work in the week long festivities but in a stylish and sophisticated way. For the amount of beer tents that invade the city you can imagine how many hay bale, barn wood inspired looks can be seen. For me, I would like to see it done in a more chic way. So take inspiration from the western look and use it in subtle ways.

The first post is about antler & co. A company I came across while researching the web for some inspiration. What do they do you ask? Well, quite simple actually. They take antlers that they collect through out the US and have come up with some unique ways of utilizing them as hooks to hold everything from coats and belts to necklaces and pots. Their website contains quite a collection that can be incorporated anywhere in your home. Each order also comes with the proper items needed to hang the antler from either a stud or dry-wall. Easy-peasy!

These pieces are one of a kind, come from nature, and really bring in that western vibe into a space without being in your face. I simply love them and need to get my hands on some for my entrance way!

Design Inspiration: Kuba Cloth

Having a love for anything that has an ethnic or organic vibe, I have been in love with Kuba cloth for quite some time now. This wonderful organic textile comes from the Kuba people and is an embroidered and applique fabric. It is the best known example of the ancient African tradition of raffia cloth weaving.

I have seen these pieces framed, made into pillows, and throws. I simply love how they add so much pattern and texture to a space with their raw quality. I can see a large over-scaled piece framed and placed above a sleek and modern sofa. LOVE!

Highbanks Highlights

I was asked to design a suite for a charity called Highbanks here in the city a while back. There were some delays and hurdles however, the project was completed last week. Highbanks is a charity that helps young women with affordable housing so that they can get back on their feet and continue their education.

Our approach to the design was to keep the space fun, modern, inspiring and a of course little sassy! We also incorporated some midcentury elements, eco-friendly options, and easy to clean surfaces.

We truly hope that whomever gets to live in the suite is inspired to take on the world!

Protein Design- baba Stool

On my trip to Paris, I met a fellow designer by the name of Katarzyna Herman-Janeic, founder of Protein Design. We met while on a bike tour around Paris. I noticed her right away with her stylish outfit and gorgeous vintage glasses! We chatted and exchanged emails and when I checked out her site, I was struck by her fabulous furniture designs. I love how she keeps it modern whilst incorporating her Polish heritage with the use of textiles.

One piece that stuck out was the baba Stool. I love the kitschy quality of the stool and find the legs to be especially fun. The stool can be customized to any colour and style of upholstery. I could see the stool being incorporated in so many different spaces from kids rooms to modern living spaces.

I wish Katarzyna the best of luck with her ventures and hope to see some of her designs in Canada soon!!!

Patio Party- Before and After

This month my article for New Home Living Magazine is all about Patios and how to make the most of them. Thanks to the fab products at PC Home Everday Living, I amped up my front patio with some great finds.

Creating a seating area near the end of the patio, defined with a fab striped outdoor carpet helped to make use of that space. We placed large evergreens to add some privacy and used the bright yellow side tables as a coffee table. Of course we have to have some pattern so the outdoor cushions we added to the seating arrangement give us some drama.

A couple of bistro sets in front of the window in a modern white give us ample room to put drinks and eats. The corner of the deck is utilized by creating a vignette with a side chair from the set, side table, and 2 great planters.

Sunday night was the finale of My Rona Home and I extremely proud to say that the winner was BLUE!!!!!!!!! What an amazing feeling to win and I could not be happier for my family. All the weeks of hard work, late nights, design dilemmas, muddy shoes, snow, sleet and rain have paid off as the Ausmus's are now proud owners of a fabulous new home, fully furnished and expertly decorated (If I can just toot my own horn for a second!)! I really don't think that I could have asked for a better team to work with, it took a little convincing on TRUSTING the designer, however in the end we created a gorgeous home and I could not be happier!!!

Joe Fresh Style

Yesterday marked the grand opening of the Joe Fresh store in Cross Iron Mills in Calgary. I was invited to attend the VIP launch. The spacious modern store was sleek and contemporary. Everything was merchandised in signature Joe style with colour blocking and the clothes really spoke for themselves. Gorgeous prints, nautical themes and the prices that are just right.

It was great to meet Joe Mimram himself and to get his thoughts on his line and to get the scoop on 2 stores opening up in New York, right on 5th Ave! How fabulous! Fingers crossed that we can get an invite to that. I also spoke with the marketing team and gave them some thoughts on what I wanted to see with the line and am happy to report that the fall collection will have more tailored clothes!

Thank you to the fabulous ladies at Tara Parker Tait for hosting a great party, amazing food, and for filling the space with amazing fashionable people in Calgary! Can't wait until the next one!

Europe shots- Paris

Anyone that knows me knows that I love to take photos. I recently purchased a new camera to take on my Europe trip and came back with over 800 photos! I know, crazy, right?! I just love documenting amazing things that I see and going through all the photos when I am back, it reminds me of the beauty that I saw.

For the next 2 posts I will be showcasing inspiring shots from my trip. The first being Paris. So many fabulous areas to explore and things to see: Latin quarter, Montmatre, and the Mairet. My breath was taken away from how beautiful everything was. Every corner you turned, there was something else to see. Canada is so new that for the most part, we don't have that history in our architecture so it was so amazing to be surrounded by such historical beauty. With that said, there was also a modern side that juxtaposed with all the history, was perfect!

STYLE ICON:Bill Cunningham

It has been a while since I have had a style icon on the blog and after chatting with a couple of friends the other day I thought it was about time and Bill Cunningham is a great fit. For those that don't know, he is a photographer for the New York Times. Having a page every Sunday in the times showcasing street fashion that he photographs on a daily basis.

I went to watch a documentary on this amazing man last night called Bill Cunningham: New York. The film was extraordinary and his love of fashion, style, and people is like nothing I have ever seen. One quote from the movie that I loved was " The streets are the real fashion show not the runways." So true! His remarkable way of photographing people on the streets and according to Anna Wintour, be one to catch new trends that she misses on the runways is remarkable.

He is loved by many, envied by many more however, the movie really showcases him as a simple person. Not one to care about wealth, celebrity status, or getting paid. He does it because he loves it and puts 200% into each one of his features for the Times. Something we should all take and learn from.

Although he is not someone who takes a lot of care into what he is wearing (a blue smock he picked up in Paris that serves simply a utilitarian purpose), having photographed the likes of Iris Apfel, Anna Piaggi, Anna Wintour and countless other fashion elite he deserves the kudos of Style Icon for his love of fashion and everything that he has given to fashion.

On the Street with Bill Cunningham

Fab find in Montmatre

I stumbled upon this store while walking around one of my favorite areas in Paris, Montmatre. The area was filled with the most amazing shops, cafes, and buildings and because it was on top of a hill provided fantastic views of the city.

Seeing the exterior of Corpus Christi, I knew I had to go in. The store was an eclectic mix of antlers, taxidermy, skulls and had a beachy vibe (what more could you ask for?). I was so in love with not only the store and how it looked but the gorgeous accessories that were on display (and displayed so well).

The pieces were gorge! All hand made with a look that I hadn't seen before. Earthy and bohemian and made with detail and style in mind. From looking at their pages, they have obviously accessorized many a french star and I believe it. I obviously could not leave without getting a little something so I picked up a sliver necklace with a arrow pendant as well as a little pin to put on the lapel of a blazer that has skull on it. REBEL, I know! My experience was perfect.

Seriously, if you are ever in Paris. This shop is a must!

My Rona Home- Episode 8

This episode definitely brought out some trying times. The weather was no cooperating at all and it pretty much raining and snowing for the full 30hrs. With this crazy weather brought on so many challenges: Not only the cold but also the slick working conditions. YIKESY!

Siding is not my strong suite if you haven't guessed and wearing a hard hard also didn't help matters much! However Robin and I kept ourselves busy with a lot of laughs and a lot of slippin' and a slidin'!

The colour scheme was perfect, a gorgeous earthy grey with white trim and a gorgeous red door. It was perfect to match the interior of the house.

My Rona Home- Episode 7

This week it was all about Living Room, Entrance, and Office. Again, the 30hr challenge went by super quickly and not without its problems. The main one being the office, the furniture that we got in the space ended up being quite bulky in the small room and we had a bit of a panic attack, but in the end made it work and made spaces look cohesive, stylish, and modern.

Living Room:

This is the "adult space", where they can entertain friends and family. We created a custom build out almost a faux fireplace of sorts for a focal point in the room. We wrapped this in a smaller version of the floor tile that we having been using through out the house again, for continuity and flow. The niche in the space had mirrors placed in the back to create a gorgeous reflection of light from the candles.

The furniture was kept clean and contemparary in a gorgeous grey, accented with water blue pillows. The cream shag run really defines the space and the chrome accents and white sheer curtains go a long way in brightening it up.

Office:

A space for Jordan to work. The small space was kept functional with an L shaped desk as well as bookshelves for storage. Accessories and a black and white picture wall, make the space.

Entrance:

A console table was added as well as a mirror to visually expand the space. The colours were kept neutral and grey so that they would flow with the open concept home.

My Rona Home- Episode 6

On to the dining and laundry room! The big discussion here was the chandelier, I loved it and Jordan did not. Robyn and I ended up deciding in an arm wrestle and from the photos, you can know who won! Anything in the name of design, I say! Even arm wrestling a girl. Ha!

Dining Room:

A subtle wallpaper in a gorgeous blue and silver made the space feel grown up and classic. The dark furniture helped in grounding the space and the chandelier added some gorgeous sparkle as did the large mirror. The perfect place to host family dinners and entertain friends.

Laundry Room:

All white store bought cabinetry installed in a way to make them look custom really helped us save some money. Laminate counter tops that were used in the bathroom were repeated in the laundry and help with creating surfaces to iron and fold laundry. Floating shelves were added for extra storage. The other side of the laundry also has extra storage as well as a folding counter space.

Decor Project

In mid-April I was approached by a client to decorate her newly-renovated house. The space looked amazing but needed a lot of furniture and decor... and she needed it completed by May 15th. It's not easy to do a space this size in one month but I love a good challenge so we took it on. The result: completed on time and under budget. Halleloo!

The job involved decorating a living area, dining room, and another small sitting area off the kitchen. Here's the trick to completing such a task: buy pieces off the floor, shop IKEA, Homesense, and Superstore and be flexible!

The look we went for was global-inspired mixed with industrial and a little Hamptons chic thrown in (for good measure). I love a mixture of styles and really feel that it makes a space. It gives it a lived-in feel. The colour palette was kept nuetral with taupes, greys, whites a subtle hints of green. A calm retreat that can be used to relax in and also entertain plenty of guests. Something which I am sure the homeowner will be doing a lot more of now that the space is complete.

Tiffany & Co Opening

Who doesn't love that iconic blue box?! Last week marked the opening of the Tiffany & Co store here in Calgary. I was invited to the grand opening perfectly titled: Breakfast at Tiffany's. We all patiently waited outside and when the doors opened were greeted by 2 gorgeous ladies dressed in the signature blue and by the staff. The morning was filled with great food, coffee and of course, the gorgeous pieces.

The store itself is amazing. So well designed with hints of Art Deco to be found everywhere. My fave were the screens separating the different zones in the store. Almost a jewel in itself, the use of soft greys and silver and the perfect lighting made the store look fab but also showed off each piece perfectly.

My Rona Home- Episode 5

Last nights episode consisted of the Kitchen, Mud room and Powder room. We had a lot of fun with this challenge but it was also a lot of work. The space that we were working in was quite small and again, we were constantly on top of one another. We had some tense situations with thinking the dishwasher was not going to fit, however it all worked out and we pulled out yet another win from the Judges!!!! Ya!

Kitchen:

We went with all white cabinetry for the kitchen for a simple, modern, and timeless look. The cabinets have a little bit of a profile on them to add a traditional feel as do the handles. The backsplash was a gorgeous watery blue glass mosaic mixed with white marble and the counter top was a delicious grey quartz. We chose to run the bamboo flooring into the ktichen because of the open concept feel and kept the island harmonious with the rest of the cabinet. The 2 pendant lights are glass and chrome and add a vintage vibe to the space. Gorgeous stainless steel appliance finish off the space perfectly.

Powder Room:

We did a wainscoting detail around the whole powder room and painted it a gorgeous watery blue to tie in the tiles in the kitchen. The 12x24 tile on the floor is the same one that we have been using through out the house and it also carries into the mud room. The look was kept simple and chic.

Mud Room:

Custom locker style cabinetry was created to add function to the otherwise simple mud room. Painted white with the wainscoting detail added to the back of each locker created flow. Gorgeous traditional style chrome hooks were added for function and a tile was added to the bottom niches for ease of cleaning. A family photo wall was created on the wall to personalize the space.

I finally made it to the make it! market this past weekend. It is The Handmade Revolution as they like to call it. A mix of everything handmade and local from artwork, jewelry, to accessories. My next few posts will be on some of the fab finds that I found.

Claire Madill owns a company called heydey designs and specializes in ceramics. Graduating from Emily Carr University in 2007, she has been working with ceramics ever since. As soon as I walked by her booth, I fell in love with these jars. Collecting these vintage jars from grandmas cupboards and second hand stores she casts a mold of each one, turning these glass vessels into ceramic ones. It gives them a whole new look and I could not get enough. She also glazes the inside of each one so as well as the lip so that you can use them for drinking, if you choose. I will be using mine to house a gorgeous arrangement of flowers! How perfect!

The Handmade Revolution

My Rona Home- Episode 4

Last night was the basement episode of My Rona Home. We had the task of finishing 2 rooms and a bathroom. This was a hard task as it compiled all tasks prior and combined them into one. We had quite a few trials and tribulations with this task: our sink that was delivered did not fit so we had to wait for another, there were some problems with the feature stripe in the play room and we didn't receive all the furniture. Oh the drama!!!

TV Room:

Since we did have a TV on the main floor, we designated the basement as the family friendly zone. A great place to curl up and watch movies and just relax. A sectional was introduced in leather to aid in that comfort factor as well as for durability. The rug adds warmth and texture and the TV unit has ample storage to hide toys and such.

Play Room:

A fun place for the kids to play and be inspired and creative. The bold red was used to make the space fun and kid friendly and contrasted by the white furniture and accents. We chose to place vinyl decals with magical elves around the space as well as 2 bold light fixtures hang from the ceiling to add some whimsey. A TV was also introduced for the times where the parents may want to watch something else in the other room.

Bathroom:

The basement bathroom was kept light and nuetral. Because it is in the basement, we chose to do a lighter colour scheme with soft blues, creams and whites. The same tile was carried from the upstairs bathroom to create a sense of continuity. With the space being a little awkward, we installed a floating shelf in a niche to add extra storage and utilize of what could have been unusable space.

I love Superstore! I think it is a great place for chic, affordable pieces for your home. They have everything from clothing, furniture and accessories. I have been working with them for the past few years promoting their fabulous line which used to be called PC Home but is now Everyday Living. My Rona Home- Episode 3

This week's episode was all about the bathrooms: Main and Ensuite. I have to say this was probably the hardest challenge as there were 2 small, cramped spaces that we all had to work in. Tile is not an easy thing to do by any means however the Blue Team totally worked it out as we do, with lots of laughter and good times!

Ensuite:

The goal here was to create a fabulous retreat. A soothing, calm space that had a spa like feel. There is nothing better than waking up in the morning and getting ready in a fabulous bathroom. We used a gorgeous glass and marble tile for the feature in the shower and around the tub. Hits of white and blue created a palette inspired by the sea. We used a 12x24 dark grey tile on the floor for some contrast and a gorgeous white vanity. The laminate counter top was used for budgetary reasons while the sleek white sink and faucet added to the modern aesthetic.

Main Bath:

A bathroom that would be utlized by the kids, we wanted to keep the colour palette simple and un-pretentious. The off white tiles in the tub surround came in 12x12 sheets for easy install and brightened up the bathroom. We repeated the 12x24 dark grey tile on the floor as well as the white vanity with the laminate counter top. We created a custom frame for the mirror to add a custom detail.

Church, My Style

This weekend also marked the first Church, My Style hosted by the ever so fabulous Kim Flannagan and Jason Krell. The event was a huge success with brunch being served, mimosas, a fashion show extravaganza The guest speaker, Danielle LaPorte really knocked it out of the park. She was inspirational, motivational, and and of course, fashionable!

I was asked to help out with decor for the event. We thought to create a fun and casual setting. The tables had different sizes of pink ribbons placed in a random linear pattern. A gorgeous arrangement of hydrangeas created by the talented Joanna at Lil' Pink Daisy Florals was placed in the centre. The stage had panels of hot pink fabric draped on either side and the middle. We placed vintage looking urns with topiary balls of greenery for a sculptural element and used hot pink tape to tape off the runway to mimic what we did on the table.

The whole look was chic and whimsical.

Lil' Pink Daisy Florals

My Rona Home- Episode 2

The second episode of My Rona Home aired last night and it was all about the Bedrooms! 30 hours is not much time to work out the bedrooms so I thought when designing the rooms that we could get the most bang for our buck with paint and wallpaper. I did not want to fuss too much with built-ins and such as I thought it would take too long. Here is a run down of what we did:

1. Allie's Bedroom

A perfect girls room with a deep, bright pink on the walls. Robyn and Jordan were worried about this colour being too bright but once they say all the furniture pieces and other accents in the room, they knew to TRUST their designer! We made a custom upholstered headboard, created a fun wall treatment with the use of ceiling medallions as wall art, and then finished the room off with the perfect chandelier.

2. Jacobs Bedroom

A lover of animals, the goal here was to create a room with some punch. A gorgeous blue on the wall with a feature stripe in white running the length of the room created a nice feature in the room. We decided to go with all white furniture, again, to play up a bit of a nautical theme. Above the bed, Jordan (Dad) created some hand drawn animal pictures that had a great personal touch to the space.

3. Master Retreat

The big impact in this space is created by the wallpaper focal wall. This bold pattern is then downplayed with the addition of the large scale furniture and crisp all white bedding. The chrome lamps and accessories add a touch of sparkle and the white sheers spanning the wall of windows go a long way in softening up the space. A seating area was created in the corner, a perfect area to curl up with a book.

I can't believe it has taken me so long to blog about these fab finds. One of favourite things to do in NYC is to walk around the streets and get lost. I find that's when I come across the most amazing finds.

While in NYC last year, I came across a store called OCHRE and just about died and went to Design Heaven. What an amazing space filled with the most unique design finds. My fave were these gorgeous horn handles. I loved their organic quality and milky texture. I knew I HAD to use these in an interior.

The perfect client came along where I was renovating an ensuite bath. They too fell in love with the handles. So we ordered them with chrome brackets to fit in with the modern space. Placed on a high gloss vanity, the look is chic, sophisticated, and organic. LOVE!

My Rona Home- Episode 1

This past Sunday was the premiere of the second season of My Rona Home on City TV. For those of you that have been following me for a while, know that I was also involved in the first season as the designer for the yellow team. This year, I am part of the BLUE TEAM!

The couple that I was paired with, the Ausmus's are a family of 4 and so fantastic. I had a great time helping them creating their dream home. The contractor is Brian and was a an amazing addition to our team. The handyman is Josh, who is so talented and really worked it out! Our whole team worked so well together and we had a lot of laughs as you will see once the other episodes start to air.

The home is an area called Mahagony and is built by Sabal Homes. The main floor is an open concept with lots of natural light. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs include the master bedroom with an ensuite. The basement has a 2 rooms, and a bathroom. The first episode was all about drywalling (yes, I actually did drywall, the proof is in the photos!), something that is really a lot harder than it looks. We were exhausted by the end of the 2o hr challenge.

Karo Cabin

I was asked by Karoleena Homes, a fabulous builder based out of Calgary, doing some extraordinary new builds to help them style their new Karo Cabins for the Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver Home and Garden Shows. A very exciting project to work on as they are up and coming and have a lot of great ideas. Karoleena Homes has also been featured on this season of Dragons Den and got a great investment from one of the judges. Congratulations!

The Karo cabin concept is modular, eco friendly and very modern. It can be placed anywhere and there many models available. The karocabin Base Module A – aka. ‘The Payton’ – features 630 sq. ft. of interior space, including kitchen, living room, bedroom, three-piece bathroom, multiple closets, fireplace, cedar deck and overhang, mechanical room and storage closet.

According to Karoleena, "Gone are the days where building a vacation home in a remote area was prohibitively slow and expensive, because whether your karocabin is destined for the far corners of northern Manitoba or the distant reaches of Vancouver Island, the cost-per-square-foot never changes. No shipping in of construction materials and trades people necessary, no two-to-three-year build time and no need to question the quality of workmanship."

NYC EATS- betel

While strolling around Soho one evening we thought to do a little cocktail stop. I spotted this gorgeous glowing restaurant on a side street and so of course, we had to go in. The place was called betel. WOW! The interiors were stunning; an industrial space with an asian twist. Designed by up and comer Martin Brudnizki, the space is so warm and inviting. The exposed brick wall, the lighting, the stainless steel bar, to the scent of the candles in the restrooms were all just right!

After having a couple of their delish cocktails ( Southeast Julep is amaze) and looking at their menu, we HAD to come back.

So we did just that, came for dinz the next night and of course, the menu did not disappoint. Southeast Asian flavours that suit every palette and the use of fresh ingredients was perfection. Our faves:

1. Son-in-law Eggs

2. Duck and Lychee Vietnamese Pancake

3. Twice Cooked Duck

4. Spicy Southern Curry of Swordfish

I know NYC is about exploring and finding your own little fave spots, however, I would highly recommend a stop at betel for a cocktail, great food and outstanding design!

On our last day in NYC, we were strolling about in Soho and came across this wonderful store called glassybaby. Attracted by the all white interior with punches of bright bold colour I was drawn in. The space was filled with these amazing hand blown glass vessels that can be used for anything from cocktails to candles.

The store has a great story: founded by Lee Rhodes, a three time cancer survivor who found great healing and hope in the light of a lit, handmade, colourful votive. She found the peace she was searching for so she started making these and giving them to others, thus, Glassybaby was born.

Today, glassybaby has donated more than half a million dollars from sales to charities dedicated to healing and helping patients with day to day needs during treatment. They have 3 locations in Seattle and one in NYC and I am sure with more to come. The concept is amazing, the product is so unique and fun. I just love it!

I love that more and more flower shops are popping up over Calgary! The most recent one is Black Earth Floral Gallery. Opened up by a brother and sister team, they have over 10 years of floral experience and you can see it in their arrangements. Their florals are unique, one of a kind, and most importantly, look amazing. They are all about customer service and making long lasting relationships with their clients. aLounge- Calgary Home and Garden Show

For this years Home and Garden Show in Calgary, I was asked to create a lounge where people could sit, enjoy a drink, and take a load off. Thinking that it was the Home and Garden Show, I thought of creating a chic poolside lounge. Bring a little Miami to Calgary!

I created the lounge around the main feature, which was a shallow pool. Then added decking all the way around with some pre-built cedar decking and then some fabulous furniture pieces from a company called InsydeOut (I have featured them on my blog before). To give it the Miami feel, we chose a deep turquoise as the feature colour and then hung some blingy chandeliers above the pool and bar to give some drama. We also accented with a lot of tropical palms, again, to give that Miami feel.

Now, on to recreating the lounge in Edmonton!

Stone Italiana- Jaipur Textured Finish

I spend a lot of time searching for tiles and counter tops at ICON Stone & Tile in Calgary. I find that they carry a great selection of tile and stone for my projects. They have just launched an amazing new line called Stone Italiana. This is quartz based collection in earthy and oriental spice tones. The surfaces are really unique in that they are irregular and have undulating texture. This is unique to Stone Italiana and is both scratch and stain resistant. Gotta love that!

Stone Italiana also offers in their collection: Grain-matt finish, Metallico, Lunare, Mosaico, and Luxury Stone. They have over 100 colours available, and are great for both residential and commercial projects. Another fabulous thing about this product is that it is available in many different sizes so it can be used for so many more applications! Gotta love that too!

I think this new product is amazing and a great alternative to Ceasar Stone or Silestone.

Light Inspiration

We are working on helping a restaurant in Calgary do a little re-vamp to their space. I am a big believer that it does not take much to turn a space around. A little paint, lighting, and accessories is all it takes to make a space come alive again. I think so many commercial spaces forget about re-inventing their interiors to become more modern. I was going through some lighting options for another client when I came across these gorgeous pendants from Tech Lighting. They are so fabulous and on trend with the exposed bulb but also very chic with their colour ways. These are going to be the perfect addition to the newly amped up space! Trend Watch: Industrial Chic

One of the trends that I spoke about at this years Home and Garden shows is all about Industrial Chic. You are seeing a huge influx of steel, raw woods, exposed beams and just a really industrial aesthetic when it comes to interiors. I love this look as I can see small elements of it being incorporated in all different types of styles, such as an industrial chair mixed with an ultra modern table or traditional chairs with an industrial table. The mix adds so much interest to a space.

Spring has sprung at BCBG

Yesterday I was invited to the Spring Fashion Preview at BCBG here in Calgary at their Chinook Center location. This location just recently opened its doors and is considered one of their new concept stores: a mix of chrome, white, and lots of crystal. A space I am sure in which every BCBG girl would love to be in.

The media preview was fantastic as it was held in the morning where breakfast/brunch was served. Coffee and a mimosa on a Wed morning? Yes Please! The place was filled with the whose who in Calgary fashion: Kim Flannigan (stylist), BR Piri (stylist), Leah Van Loon (Stylist) Michelle Magnan (fashion blogger), Malwina Gudowska (fashion writer), Karen Ashbee (fashion writer) and many other influencers in YYC. The event was coordinated by my amazing partner Jason Krell (Jason Krell PR).

Now, onto the clothes. A mix of delicious patterns was key to their spring look. As soon as you entered you were greeted by 4 mannequins dressed in amazing printed dresses and tops that were layered with long sleeve printed shirts under them. Love this look as it was eclectic and one that anyone can pull off. My fave print consisted of a black and white feather motif, almost taking inspiration from the Black Swan.

Spring is all about colour and why not embrace it in your wardrobe. Be sure to pop into your closest BCBG store to get the latest and greatest in spring fashions!

Earl Grey Lodge

We were invited to spend a few nights at the Earl Grey Lodge in Panorama and decided to go over the long weekend. Living so close to the mountains, it doesn't make any sense for us not to plan these quick getaways every so often. The 3 hour drive was breathtaking, a good play list will also add to the drive so be sure to stock up on some good tunes for the trip.

When we arrived, we were greeted by a gorgeous, rustic log cabin and of course by the owners Phil and Claire. First things first, we put our bags in our room, which was quaint and simple and headed upstairs to the main dining area and bar, it was happy hour after all. We got to know Phil and Claire and what they were all about. Having moved to Canada from England to pursue their dream of owning a bed and breakfast and being in the glorious rockies.

They were the most gracious hosts and treated us so well. One thing I must mention about the lodge is the food. There is open kitchen so at dinner you can watch the cook preparing the delicious meals. The first night, we had a 5 course dinner with the main course being a delicious Lamb and the second day was a 3 course meal with Sable Fish. Everything was fantastic.

The decor is unpretentious, warm, and just right. It feels like home with a great colour palette accented with bold hits of red. The food is absolutely out of this world, the hosts are fabulous and the well, you are surrounded by the best views that nature can provide. You can't really ask for anything more.

Our experience staying at the Earl Grey Lodge was by far one of the best experiences we have had in a while. With being such short drive, we are going to make sure that we visit again soon and so should you!

I did a segment over the weekend for Global TV all about PC Home Winter Whites. Now, when it comes to basics in the home such as dishes, towels, and bedding I keep it simple with white as it is a great base to build off of.

Crisp white sheets are the perfect compliment to any chic bedroom and can be amped up with a bold duvet cover or as simple as some toss cushions. The look is simple and refined, almost hotel chic.

Keep your dishes white this way you can change up your table decor with charger plates, placemats, and side plates. Having coloured dishes really hinders what you can do for your colour palette so keep it clean and go with white dishes for everyday.

Everyone loves to be pampered and when you think about a wonderful spa experience you think white luxurious robes and towels. There is nothing more appealing then seeing white towels in a bathroom. Introduce some colour with patterned face and hand towels.

Flowers are so wonderful! Having fresh flowers in the house is one of my greatest indulgences. I have a friend who recently started her own company called Lil' Pink Daisy Florals. I have been working with Joanna whilst she has been with other florists through out the city and am so glad she is venturing out on her own. She has a wonderful aesthetic and really gets it. There is nothing better than talking to someone about what you want when it comes to a floral arrangement and they totally get you half way through talking to them. Having used her for many events and shoots that I have worked on, she has never failed me. Her fun, charismatic, way is quite charming and who doesn't like a double dose of happiness? Gorgeous flowers and a great personality!

Raoul Textiles- Y&Co

I was contacted by a rep at Y&Co, a carpet and textile company based out of Toronto and Montreal. They sent me samples of textiles that they carry and I was immediately drawn to a line called Raoul Textiles. I went online, did some research and found that they are a family owned business based in California. All their fabrics are hand printed and are vibrant interpretations of historical patterns, drawn from many regions and cultures. The fabric has a time worn look and feel. I love how casual they are and how they remind me of beach side living. The patterns are so rich, you can really see the cultural influences and the colour ways are bold, just my style!

Power to the jogi

I recently had lunch with the senior manager of public relations at Loblaw and she told me about this fabulous new line of health and wellness accessories that was being developed by the team at Joseph Mimran & Associates for Loblaw called jogi.

This collection of fitness products included yoga mats, weights, toning balls, balance boards, resistance bands. I had to feature them as they are quite stylish in the colour palette they have chosen. I think with spring soon approaching everyone is looking to get fit and ready for summer. So why not do it stylishly?! Price points for these pieces range from $5-$45, so there is no excuse.

The 42 piece collection is in stores now and is available at Loblaw banner stores such as the Real Canadian Superstores across Canada.

Quick Before and After

I was recently asked my some long time clients to help them do a quick makeover on their spare bedroom. They were having guests over and needed a quick fix. I obviously headed to the nearest Homesense and purchased some fabulous bedding and accessories to make the space go from YAWN to YEOWZA and with minimal expense.

The bedding was kept simple and clean. A subtle stripe detail adds just the right hit of colour.

The bed itself is gorgeous but needed bed side lamps that were a little more substantial and these gorge chrome base lamps with grey shades did the trick.

To add a little bling I decided to lean mirrors in behind the lamps to reflect the light

Accessories are a must with any bedside table and these bold coloured ceramic ones are perfect!

Accent cushions pull the subtle blue from the bedding and add a great layered look.

I am a huge fan of wallpaper and ever since coming across trove, I have not been able to get them off my mind. I am actually in the midst of sourcing their wood veneer line for a residential project and just got the samples today!

Those that know me, know that I LOVE textiles. Prints, colours, patterns and texture... I like it all. Suki Cheema Home is collection for sleeping in living. All hand crafted and inspired by Cheema's travel to India, it is made up of pillows, throws, blankets, bags, napkins, and tablecloths. Return of the Candelabra

While doing some research on lighting for a client I came across a website called Roll & Hill. A company that was started in New York City in 2010. The company was started by Jason Miller who is a lighting designer himself and designed the now ubiquitous Superordinate Antler Lamps. Working with a handful of other designers now, the goal is to create well designed contemporary lighting for residential and commercial interiors, as well as cultivate a position at the forefront of design and production. Roll & Hill products will be unique, responsible, innovative and add beauty to whatever space they occupy.

What caught my eye were the Agnes Candelabra collection. I love how they have taken such a traditional item and made it so modern. The hanging versions are to die for! They almost remind me of tree branches in a way but done in a more futuristic way. Roll & Hill's take on this collection is as follows:

"The Agnes Candelabra are inspired by our heroine Agnes, a worker in the world’s oldest profession during the 1849 American Gold Rush. Defying the expected roles as wife and mother, she instead chose the fierce independence and transient lifestyle of the frontier. TOM FORD: Return to Womenswear

For my first post of the year I wanted to celebrate Tom Fords return to womenswear. An absolute icon in fashion, Tom Ford was a lead designer for GUCCI for many years before venturing out on his own. His menswear collections since debuting were impeccably tailored and flawless. His first womenwear collection is just that, beautifully made with the just the right touch of fun.

From the video below you can see how he has put "the fashion show" back to where it used to be. It is all about the clothes and not so much about the spectacle of the show. Watching the video gave me goosebumps! Oh how I wish I could have been watching it live... one day!!!

BT Calgary Segment: Holiday Entertaining

I did a segment today on our local morning show, Breakfast Television (City TV). The segment was based on holiday entertaining. How to do it with style and on a budget. All items were sourced at PC Home, one of my most fave places to shop at when I am entertaining at home. I did a post on their stylish holiday wares earlier this month, but this shows you how you can creating stunning table settings with everything sourced from PC Home.

Here are a few of my tips for entertaining during the holidays:

1. Keep it simple and chic. Make sure to have a delicious colour palette in mind. I did 2 settings: Modern and Traditional.

2. Dishes should be kept simple and white, play up the colour palette with chargers, side plates, and place mats.

3. Use decorative gift wrap as a table runner to play up on pattern and colour.

4. Create your own flower arrangements. I took a simple $20 arrangement and split it up to create 3 and mixed in some Christmas greens.

5. Instead of wine, think about giving a hostess gift that will come in handy over time. Plates, desert cups, fondue sets, etc.

6. Use trays as charger plates, this can be something your guest can take home with them. The gorgeous hammered tray in the modern setting is fab!

Last Thursday marked the grand opening of Anthropologie in Calgary. We were asked to view the shop before it opened its doors to the public. I have visited quite a few locations across the states and am so glad there is finally one in Calgary.

I love the vintage vibe of Anthropologie home wares and don't even get me started on my love affair with their candles. Everything has a handmade quality with a mix of vibrant prints and patterns. I could have purchased everything in the store! One of my fave things were there lamp shades and bases, a must for any stylish home.
